I became interested in wildlife, and especially birds, when I was a kid living at my grandmother’s semi-rural house on the edge of the county town. There were lots of birds around and some of the common ones I learned to identify – such as coal tits, long-tailed tits, goldfinches and so on – are still among my favourites to this day. I spent a lot of time in local fields and woods, often vanishing for hours on end. As a child I did a lot of drawing before becoming interested in photography. I still sketch and paint to this day but mostly do photography.
I began wildlife photography in the mid-2000s when I bought my first digital SLR and a couple of lenses. Initially it was for record shots of the birds I saw but, over time, I've wanted to improve my photography beyond under/overexposed, blurry, and generally awful 'record' shots to much nicer pictures.
I have travelled to quite a few locations over the years for birding and/or photography - Australia, Ecuador, the USA (Texas), Wales (Skomer Island), the north of England and The Gambia. I'd love to revisit Australia and South America although I have other places to visit first. One day when finances allow, perhaps.
Currently I use Canon cameras and lenses: R5, R6 Mark II, RF 100-500mm L zoom, EF 500mm f/4 L IS (II) prime lens, often with an EF 1.4x III extender to get to 700mm, an EF 100mm f/2.8 IS macro lens and an ancient EF 24-105mm zoom. I also have an RF 1.4x extender but, so far, that's not seen the light of day.
