I had always wanted to visit a seabird-filled island. I had previously visited Bempton Cliffs, in East Yorkshire, and seen the great colonies of Gannets, Guillemots and Razorbills, with some Atlantic Puffins among them, but it isn't quite the same as visiting an island and actually being among the birds. In May 2025 I got an opportunity to stay on Skomer Island, off the south west coast of Wales, for a few days. The main attraction is, of course, the puffins but there are many more birds there; other seabirds such as Razorbills and gulls, plus Red-billed Choughs, Short-eared Owls and the commoner birds.
All photos were taken with Canon R5 with Canon EF 500mm f/4 L (II) lens with EF 1.4x (III) extender (700mm) or Canon R6 Mk II with Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L (II) zoom lens.
